WHAT MAKES COTTON STAND OUT COMPARED TO OTHER FABRICS

We all are aware that Cotton is a soft fibre that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant . From the cotton plant the fibre is most often spun into thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile. Cotton is a valuable crop because only about 10% of the raw weight is lost in processing. Once traces of wax, protein, etc. are removed, the remainder is a natural polymer of pure cellulose. This cellulose is arranged in a way that gives cotton unique properties of strength, durability, and absorbency. Each fibre is made up of twenty to thirty layers of cellulose coiled in a neat series of natural springs. When the cotton boll (seed case) is opened the fibres dry into flat, twisted, ribbon-like shapes and become linked together and interlocked. This interlocked form is ideal for spinning into a fine yarn.

Cotton is composed of pure cellulose, a naturally occurring polymer. Cellulose is a carbohydrate, and the molecule is a long chain of glucose (sugar) molecules.

History
Cotton has been used to make very fine lightweight cloth in areas with tropical climates since ages. Some authorities claim that it was likely that the Egyptians had cotton as early as 12,000 BC, and they have found evidence of cotton in Mexican caves (cotton cloth and fragments of fibre interwoven with feathers and fur) which date back approximately 7,000 years.

HOW TO PRESERVE YOUR FAVORITE SHIRTS FOR LONG….

Cotton fabric is breathable and transmits moisture away from the body and is absorbent and removes unwanted fluid from the skin like a towel, according to Cotton Incorporated. Cotton allows you to remain comfortable as you exercise, keeping moisture from building up between your skin and clothing. The International Forum for Cotton Promotion states that cotton can take up to one-fifth of its weight in water before feeling damp.
Now, it becomes important to know how you can take due care of your garment and increase its longevity and prolong its finish.

  • Cotton fibrers will shrink unless the fabric has been preshrunk or processed, so always carefully read the washing instructions on the care label. "Cold water only" may signal that your shirt will shrink if not washed carefully.
  • Cotton items that are preshrunk may be washed in hot, warm or cold water, depending on the colour of the garment and the care label recommendations.
  • If care labels agree, add chlorine bleach to white cotton wash loads to remove stains; coloured cottons may be brightened by non-chlorine bleach formulated for coloured clothing.
  • Take care while drying your cotton shirts. Over drying cotton will encourage shrinkage.

BEAT THE HEAT WITH COTTON SHIRTS

In India the heat during summers can be quite oppressive. Temperatures soaring well over 40 °C are the norm in most parts of the country. While there is not much that we can do about the raging sun we can dress appropriately to mitigate the ill effects of this unbearable weather.

Cotton is king among fibres when it comes to combating heat. It is a natural fibre with the unique properties of being light in weight, breathable and not sticking to the skin. Thus follow the golden rule of wearing only cotton clothing in summer.

It is also useful to wear lighter colours that reflect more light and heat than darker shades that have a tendency to absorb them and make you feel warmer.

COTTON SHIRTS OVER POLYESTER SHIRTS

Polyester shirts or cotton shirts? Does the fabric really make a difference? Yes, it does. There are many who prefer just cotton, but cheaper polyester is also tempting, isn’t it? But is it worth it?

It is worthwhile to make a comparison to know the nature of the fibres in question. Cotton is a natural fibre and then processed into yarn before it is woven. Polyester undergoes lots of chemical processes in order to convert it into fibre. In simple language, cotton is a natural fibre whereas polyester is a man-made or artificial fibre.

Now, we come to the point of which is the more preferred fabric. It definitely is cotton because of its many advantages. Cotton is considered as one of the softest fabric and friendly to the skin as it is very breathable and keeps our body cool and comfortable. On the other hand, polyester is abrasive to the skin. It isn't that skin friendly as we know. Even though, it dries faster and requires minimal ironing, it can cause adverse reactions to the skin. Especially, during summers, when men tend to sweat a lot, polyester shirts become unwearable as they don't soak water much as compared to cotton. Cotton has a fantastic property of soaking water up to three times of its weight, making it the best choice of fabric always, especially in summers.

COMFORT IN WEARING COTTON SHIRTS

The world uses cotton more than any other natural fiber and it is primarily grown and used to make cloth. Because cotton is a natural product and because of the way it is designed and manufactured into clothing, it has many advantages, such as its ability to control moisture, insulate, provide comfort and it is also hypoallergenic, weatherproof and is a durable fabric. In this article we will introduce the five biggest benefits of a shirt made out of 100% cotton.

1. Cooling Property

Cotton has great cooling properties. Cotton is a breathable fabric, which allows your body to stay dry, while your skin is still able to ´breathe´. This ensures staying cool, even on warmer days in summer. Or any other situation where you might sweat.

Because cotton is able to absorb moisture, your body will stay dry throughout the day and this will help you to feel comfortable and cool too.

Last but not least, the cotton fibers keep the fabric away from your skin. This creates a thin layer of air that not only helps you stay cool in summer, but also helps to keep you warm during colder days.

These properties also make the shirt to stay ´fresh´ all day. Most synthetic blends feel roughly the same as cotton in the morning but will get sweaty during the day. They might even start to smell a little bit funky. But with a 100% cotton dress shirt you can be quite sure about have a crisp and fresh shirt throughout the entire day.

COTTON’S JOURNEY...FROM PLANT TO FABRIC

Cotton surrounds the seeds of the cotton plant. The natural properties of the cotton fibre make it easy to spin into a strong yarn. Each seed is surrounded by many single cotton fibres, which look like very fine hairs. Beneath these lies a second layer of short, fuzzy fibres. These are known as linters.

Cotton fibres are not straight, but actually spiral like a twist in a rope that is being hel by two people twisting in opposite directions. These twists mean that the fibre surface is rough, so when a number of fibres are placed together, they interlock and twist. This makes cotton so suitable for spinning into yarn.

The new world cottons have longer fibres than their old world cousins. This means they can be spun into finer and stronger yarns. Almost all of the cotton grown today is of the new world variety.

There are many processes between Cotton plucking from the plants to making them into the end product. Let's take a brief look on these stages.

Cotton harvesting - where the cotton balls are plucked from the plants and packed into bales and sent to a ginning factory.

COMFORTABLE OFFICE WEAR FORMAL SHIRTS

Food, clothing and shelter have long been the three basic necessities of man. Fulfilling these needs is uppermost in everyone’s minds. Once the basics are in place it is time to go a step further and feel comfort and joy while fulfilling these needs.

The simple act of eating tasty and nutritious food can be an enriching experience. It is possible to do this at a low cost if one sources the right ingredients and makes his own meals and eschews going to fancy restaurants and eating highly processed foods that give a person a false sense of satisfaction for a short while. Such foods also have long term ill effects on a person’s health.

A similar analogy applies to clothing too. It is important to wear the right fabric that is tailored to comfortably fit the contours of the body. At the end of the day it is important to feel comfortable in your own skin and look elegantly dressed at the same time. Fabrics made from various synthetic fibres give rise to skin allergies and can cause you to sweat excessively and make you feel “sticky” all day. Such clothing naturally adversely affect your mental state too.

It is no small wonder that cotton is “king” among fibres, both natural and artificial.....
